How To Check Compression On Small Engine


To check small engine compression you have to use compression gauge. On an engine in standard shape, the compression should be Between 90 and 100 pounds per square inch.


To check compression the spark plug should be displaced. Before displacing the plug observe for any dirt or foreign material that could fall into the spark plug hole when it is displaced.


Clean around the spark plug. The spark ignition wire should be displaced from the spark plug. The rubber cap may be sealed onto the plug and you have to work it lose by rolling and dragging upward on the insulating cap, not the wire.


Displace the spark plug, put it aside, and place the ignition wire out of the way.Place the compression gauge onto the spark plug hole, pinch steadily to seal the connection, and give the rope a few drags. Most compression gauges have a valve to contain the pressure until you are ready to discharge it.
